Working with Google and NCBI to launch PLoS Currents: Influenza

For a few months, a senior team from PLoS, NCBI and Google have been working together to build a new and experimental website on Google Knol using their new features which allow content to be gathered together in collections after first being vetted by expert moderators.  The result of that effort can be seen in PLoS Currents: Influenza which was launched yesterday.

The new site announcement focused on a blog that Harold Varmus, Chairman and Co-founder of PLoS, posted simulateneously yesterday on the PLoS and Google blogs.  The news has been well received, we like this post from Read Write Web a blog that shares thoughts on next generation web and media.

Today, we’re focusing attention on the six scientific submissions that currently appear in PLoS Currents: Influenza. You can can read more about the science behind four of them in this in-depth blog from one of the expert moderators, Eddie Holmes.  Here’s an excerpt:

“Since the central idea of PLoS Currents: Influenza is to rapidly disseminate data and ideas in the realm of influenza research, stimulated by the ongoing epidemic of swine-origin influenza virus (H1N1pdm). Given this backdrop, it is no surprise that some of first contributions consider important aspects of the H1N1pdm epidemic”.
